On-line positioning of dummies in crash test preparation with TraceCam and DuPos

When crash tests are carried out, it has to be safeguarded during preparations that the dummy is placed in the correct position.

With the AICON 3D TraceCam System and the DuPos software, an optical positioning device is available that allows an on-line positioning of the dummy within the co-ordinate system of the vehicle.

Optimizing of dummy positioning in practice

When performing a crash test, it is essential that the dummy is positionned and seated in the vehicle according to regulations which are the basis for this kind of test. The new measurement system for dummy positionning fulfills the following requirements:
  • Positioning within the vehicle co-ordinate system
  • Documentation of the result in a report
  • Possibility to record additional measures
  • Data base on all information on reoccuring test conditions (vehicle type, dummy, legal information, seating position)
  • Simple usage for fast positioning
  • Used on crashtracks and in sled tests

TraceCam system in combination with DuPos software for dummy positioning

With the new on-line positioning system TraceCam and the DuPos software for dummy positioning an optical measuring system is available. The system consists of the following components:
  • TraceCam camera head with four high resolution digital cameras and IR ring flash
  • Notebook
  • Software AICON 3D Studio and the module DuPos
  • Calibration field (approx. 600 x 600 mm)
  • Workstation cart for easy movement

Three Steps towards the right positioning of the dummy

For the positioning of the dummy with the system, three basic Steps have to be taken:
  • Step 1: Preparation
To prepare the dummy positioning, reference points are signalized on the corresponding side of the vehicle. Those co-ordinates are available within co-ordinate system of the vehicle. After the positioning system is set up and installed, a continuous transformation into the co-ordinate system of the vehicle is performed using the points. Movements of the vehicle which could arise from placing the dummy are permanently compensated.

  • Step 2: Positioning of the dummy
The actual position of the dummy is recorded via control points placed on the dummy and compared to the ideal position. By using the software module DuPos, the actual position of the dummy is constantly shown in a co-ordinate table or in graphic representation after selection of the test setting.

  • Step 3: Touch Probe, report
By using a also additional co-ordinates or distances can be measured. Finally, a report is generated.
